Clíodhna began her career at the age of fifteen and studied conducting as part of her BMus at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester. She further developed her conducting skills at masterclasses with Atso Almila at the Sibelius Academy in Finland. Clíodhna is an innovative and versatile conductor. As well as conducting the mainstream classical repertoire since 2007, Clíodhna has commissioned and conducted many new works together with the Orchester Divertimento Bern.
Clíodhna is currently touring Comedy meets Classics with Carrington-Brown and the Berlin-based “Swonderful” orchestra.
The Celtic Cello
Clíodhna studied cello in Ireland with Olwen Lewis and Aisling Drury Byrne. She continued with Emma Ferrand at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, Yuli Turovsky at the Université de Montréal and Susanne Basler at the Zürcher Hochschule der Künste. Clíodhna has participated in Masterclasses with Janos Starker, Valentin Berlinsky, and David Darling.
Clíodhna has performed cello concertos and chamber works and has given numerous recitals. She also enjoys performing improvised music, creating music in the moment with others. Clíodhna is passionate about sharing the joy of music-making with others. She first began teaching music in Ireland at the age of fifteen and since then has taught in the UK, Canada, France and Switzerland. She was awarded the Teaching Diploma from the Associated Board of the Royal Schools of Music with Distinction.
From 2004 Clíodhna has been a member of staff at the Musikschule Konservatorium Bern, where she teaches cello to students aged 5 to 80 and directs an orchestra for children. She is currently composing a volume of pieces for beginner cellists that includes a manual for teachers.
In 2016 Clíodhna was commissioned by the Orchester Divertimento Bern to compose a work celebrating the centenary of the Easter Rising in Dublin. She chose to write Coillte Draíochta – Enchanted Forests: a multi-generational piece for children’s orchestra, chamber orchestra, bodhrán and narrator based on an Irish fairytale. Clíodhna has also composed three volumes of music for children’s string orchestra.
Clíodhna has collaborated with the successful entertainer duo Carrington-Brown (UK) to write and arrange the orchestral show Comedy meets Classics which is currently touring.
Since 2008 Clíodhna has worked closely with Mary Knysh (USA). They have facilitated many music-improvisation workshops and drum-circles together. In addition Clíodhna has led workshops for refugees in Bern.
Together with Mary Knysh, Clíodhna composed A Day in the Forest. This CD is designed for primary educators to use as a model for an interactive classroom project! It is for everyone interested in promoting imagination and inspiration in the field of education. Our vision is to stimulate mind-body connections, encourage active listening and develop social-emotional skills.
